Hair transplant procedures in Turkey are regarded as cosmetic surgery. It is suitable for restoring hair in people with pattern baldness or bald scars resulting from physical injury. The procedure can be carried out on both men and women. A transplant surgery is a permanent procedure and a major decision in altering your appearance. Therefore, it is important to understand at least the basics of hair transplant procedures to have an idea of what to expect in preparation.
Harvesting and implanting techniques
The surgeon does preliminary examinations on the donor site – the source of the hair follicles – which is usually the back of the head since it is genetically impervious to baldness. These tests determine the natural health and density of the hair follicles for viability. The recipient side, which is the bald area, is also carefully examined to determine the best transplant method and the number of sessions required for the desired results. The surgeon then decides on one of two harvesting methods.
Follicular unit transplant (FUT)
FUT or strip harvesting, is the oldest of hair transplant techniques. During the procedure, your surgeon will clean and numb both the donor and recipient sites. Thin strips of hair-bearing tissue about 1cm wide and 15cm long are carefully cut from the donor site. To extract grafts from the strip, your surgeon will dissect it into single follicular units. The donor wound is closed with stitches, and the adjacent natural hair covers the scar. The recipient site is punctured using needles or blades to accommodate the grafts. Finally, each graft is inserted in the individual puncture holes in a natural pattern and angle.
Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
First, your surgeon will ask to shave the recipient and donor sites as it lowers the risk of infection. In the FUE hair transplant method, a micro punch measuring less than 1mm in diameter isolates individual follicular units containing between 1 and 4 hairs. Needles or micro-blades puncture the recipient site in a consistency similar to that of the harvested grafts to mimic a natural hair pattern. Your surgeon will then carefully place the grafts into the tiny incisions, one at a time. FUE transplants result in natural looking hair follicles but require impeccable precision and skill – making it more expensive and lengthy than the strip method.
Recovery and side effects
Transplant procedures usually take 4-8 hours depending on the extent of the transplant. Normally, there is no reason to stay the night, so you need to have someone drive you home. After surgery, both the donor and recipient sites may be tender and the surgeon will prescribe some pain and antibiotic medication. You may also need to wear bandages for a day or two. Most patients resume normal daily operations in about three days. After two weeks, you can return to your normal hair care practices.
A few weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair usually falls off; this should not worry you, as after a few more weeks new hair begins to appear, and you should expect full results after 6 to 9 months.
A common side effect of hair transplant is shock loss. This is the sudden loss of some of the original hair on the donor site. Shock loss is not permanent, and the hair recovers after a few weeks. Other side effects include the usual aftermath of surgical operations such as reactions from anesthesia, bleeding and skin inflammation, which are easily treatable and quickly dissipate in a few days.
How much does it cost?
The cost of hair transplant in Turkey can be anywhere between 2000 to 5000 dollars. However, this is not entirely accurate, but it should give you and idea of how much it might cost. The price depends the type of surgery, and the quality of service. It is difficult to pinpoint a standard cost for a hair transplant with so many variables.
