What Is a Gastric Balloon Procedure?

A gastric balloon, also known as an intragastric balloon, is a non-surgical method for treating obesity. It is endoscopically inserted into the stomach and acts as a space-filler, allowing only a small part of the stomach to be available for food intake. This leads to the patient being able to consume only small meals since the stomach is quickly filled. The vagus nerve, which runs over the stomach wall, signals the brain earlier that enough food has been consumed, thereby inducing a feeling of satiety sooner.

Gastric Balloon Cost

The cost of a gastric balloon ranges from €2500- 2700 depending on the balloon type and the location of the procedure.

Non surgical gastric balloon

The insertion of a gastric balloon only requires an outpatient procedure and is generally not a surgical intervention in a hospital. The treatment takes place under light anesthesia (sedation) and lasts about 30 minutes. A gastroscopy is performed first, followed by the insertion of the empty gastric balloon through a tube that goes through the mouth and esophagus into the stomach, where it is then filled with colored fluid.

A gastric balloon is typically suitable for individuals with a BMI between 27 and 40 who have difficulty losing weight with traditional methods. It’s important that the person is willing to adjust their diet and lifestyle, as the gastric balloon is only a temporary solution and must be removed after six to twelve months.

Common Side Effects: The most frequently reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and discomfort. These symptoms are typically most intense during the first few days following the procedure and usually subside as the body adjusts to the balloon. Although rare, serious complications can occur. These include the risk of the balloon bursting, which can lead to the need for emergency procedure. There’s also a risk of the balloon causing a blockage in the digestive system.
